Silk Way West Airlines ramps up cargo at CVG Airport
Aircargo News / Rebecca Jeffrey / March 18, 2022Silk Way West Airlines, operated in conjunction with Crane Worldwide Logistics, will operate 80 inbound and 80 outbound flights at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) this year. The new operations, at the north end of the airport where FexEx also operates, will contribute to around 14,400 tons of cargo at CVG.Planes arriving from Asia and Europe will land once a week until the summer months, at which time activity will ramp up to two flights a week.Trego-Dugan Aviation will be providing ground handling support for Silk Way West at CVG.“This has been a great collaboration, and we’ve been happy to assist with coordination, including connecting these companies to local partners,” said Candace McGraw, chief executive officer, CVG Airport. “As we build out this service for additional cargo carriers, we look forward to what’s to come.”Cargo handling has expanded at CVG over the last several years as DHL and Amazon have grown their hub presence. At the end of 2021, cargo tonnage was up 18% over 2020 and eclipsed 100% growth over the last five years. While most cargo planes and activity, including unloading, sorting and reloading, takes place on the south end of the airport campus, general cargo activity also takes place on the north end.In August 2021, [Amazon Air opened its new $1.5bn air hub at CVG](https://www.aircargonews.net/sectors/e-commerce-logistics/amazon-air-opens-1-5bn-us-cargo-hub/) that will serve as the e-commerce giant’s central US cargo hub.[](https://www.wvxu.org/local-news/2022-05-04/new-tech-at-cvg-will-help-streamline-pre-covid-sized-crowds)[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.aircargonews.net/cargo-airport/silk-way-west-airlines-ramps-up-cargo-at-cvg-airport/)Read more - Mar 1, 2022
CVG explores the use of AI to predict terminal crowding
Future Travel Experience / March, 2022Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), a member of the [FTE Innovation Hub](https://www.fte-hub.com/), has teamed up with the University of Cincinnati (UC) to explore the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to predict crowding and enhance the passenger experience throughout the airport.CVG engaged UC College of Engineering and Applied Science aerospace engineering doctoral student Javier Viaña to utilize airport data to create a software programme to help the airport predict when travelers arrive at the airport, broken down into 15-minute increments. By leveraging data collected by another programme previously developed by CVG, Viaña has been able to specifically model queue lines at the security checkpoint.“The main objective of this work is to improve the passenger experience and inform operational decision-making at the airport,” said Candace McGraw, Chief Executive Officer, CVG. “The modelling done by Javier provides the airport and our business partners reliable data to prepare our operations based on passenger arrival predictions, potentially reducing crowding and wait times along the travel journey from parking and check-in to security screening and concessions.”CVG engaged UC College of Engineering and Applied Science aerospace engineering doctoral student Javier Viaña (pictured) to utilise airport data to help the airport predict when travelers arrive at the terminal. “What makes this model unique is how UC is using artificial intelligence based on fuzzy logic, a type of computer decision making that allows us to provide a human-like explanation for its predictions,” said Javier Viaña. “We refer to this type of algorithms as explainable and transparent.”The collaboration is a direct result of a multi-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) between UC and CVG. The MOU provides the University’s research talent and emergent technologies a living-laboratory environment (the airport) that is a mutually beneficial relationship.[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.futuretravelexperience.com/2022/03/cvg-explores-the-use-of-ai-to-predict-terminal-crowding/) - COMPLETE WITH VIDEO AND PICTURESRead more - Feb 28, 2022

CVG and UC put AI to work to help airport predict crowding and enhance the passenger experience
Cincinnati, Oh. (February 24, 2022) – The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is teaming up with the University of Cincinnati (UC) to predict crowding and enhance the passenger experience throughout the airport.CVG engaged UC College of Engineering and Applied Science aerospace engineering doctoral student Javier Viaña to utilize airport data to create a software program to help the airport predict when travelers arrive at the airport, broken down into 15-minute increments. Business Courier: One of CVG's carriers is merging with Spirit Airlines
Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / February 7, 2022Frontier and Spirit Airlines announced Monday that they are planning to merge, creating the country's largest ultra-low cost carrier with expanded service. Frontier currently serves Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.Pending approval by regulators, the merger would create the nation's fifth-largest airline, [according to the New York Times](https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2022%2F02%2F07%2Fbusiness%2Ffrontier-spirit-airlines-merger.html&data=04%7C01%7Csdeatherage%40cvgairport.com%7C7016cc3ceb2c4969fff308d9ebfbc4e2%7Ce88b51b645364ffaa129350653cdad28%7C0%7C0%7C637800288843008228%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000&sdata=g0PdGVqh043MRrClb1eCnYvr1APn5PEbO77xwJW2K%2BA%3D&reserved=0). At CVG, Frontier is the fourth-largest airline in terms of passengers carried behind Delta, American and Allegiant.Denver-based Frontier was key to the drastic lowering of CVG's fares over the past nine years. It was the first low-cost carrier to give CVG a chance in decades, starting a flight to Denver in 2013. Since then, Allegiant and Southwest have entered the market, helping drive the average fare downward.Miramar, Fla.-based Spirit does not currently offer service from CVG.In a release, the company said it expects to offer more low fares to more travelers in more U.S., Latin American and Caribbean destinations. The companies claimed the merger will deliver $1 billion in annual consumer savings. The two companies offer more than 1,000 daily flights to 145 destinations in 19 countries. It's unclear exactly how the merger will affect CVG, but Frontier has lagged behind Allegiant in passengers and non-stop destinations for years. If the merger does result in the combined company offering more flights, it could be a boon for CVG and shore up Frontier as it competes against Allegiant.Ultra-low cost carriers offer an unbundled, basic fare and then charge fees for everything else, including seat assignments, checked and carry-on baggage, snacks and other amenities. At CVG, Frontier is listed as offering direct flights to Atlanta, Cancun, Dallas, Denver, Fort Myers, Las Vegas, Miami, New Orleans, Orlando, Sarasota and Tampa.[FULL STORY HERE (subscription-based)](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2022/02/07/one-of-cvgs-carriers-is-merging-with-spirit-airli.html)Read more
