Business Courier: CVG fares starting to increase as pandemic flight cuts ease
Fares at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International airport ticked upward in the first quarter of 2021 after hitting their lowest level in history late last year at the height of the pandemic. The average fare at CVG was $248 during the first three months of the year, up from $237 during the final three months of 2020. The fourth quarter fares were an all-time low since the federal government began tracking fare data 25 years ago. The national average was $260.CVG’s fares were the 30th-cheapest among the top 100 U.S. airports, not including ones in Hawaii and Puerto Rico. CVG was tied with San Jose, Calif. The only airports in the Midwest with cheaper fares were Cleveland and both Chicago airports. The pandemic drastically reduced fares at CVG and most airports nationwide, with demand for travel reduced during the pandemic’s peak. But currently, leisure travel has almost entirely recovered, with the airlines’ lucrative business travel slowly increasing each month. The Delta variant of the coronavirus could impact how quickly business travel recovers. CVG’s passenger traffic is at 60% of 2019 levels currently.“As leisure and some business travel returns, we have plenty of options for travelers whether it’s ensuring you have a nonstop flight and/or ensuring you can secure the flight at an affordable price,” said CVG CEO [Candace McGraw](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/search/results?q=Candace%20McGraw).[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/08/10/cvg-fares-starting-to-increase-as-pandemic-flight.html) (subscription-based)Read more - Aug 5, 2021

CVG Airport partners with ArtWorks on two new murals
Erlanger, KY (July 7, 2021) ― The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) is partnering with [ArtWorks](https://www.artworkscincinnati.org/about-us/), a Greater Cincinnati nonprofit that transforms people and places through creative works of art, to create two larger-than-life murals in the airport’s new consolidated rental car facility opening this fall. The new rental car facility and customer service building will offer a more connected and seamless passenger experience as well as provide a new front door to the airport Terminal. The new facility represents a $175 million investment from CVG, and construction remains on track for a timely opening this fall. For many visitors to the new facility, these pieces of art will be some of the first images they see and will convey the Cincinnati region’s strong public arts heritage.Prior to the opening, two artists will plan and design the murals on the first and third floors of the facility. The project will employ up to 16 youth apprentices, who will execute the design under the mentorship of six professional teaching artists. The murals will convey themes of movement, flight, and transportation while promoting what the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region has to offer. [Adrienne Gaither](http://adriennegaither.com/about-1), an abstract visual artist originally from Cincinnati, now located in Washington, D.C., will be the artist to design the application on the first-floor wall. Ms. Gaither’s abstract nature will complement the aesthetics of the angles and shapes taking form in the space. Mural application begins at the end of July with completion around mid-September. [Christian Dallas](https://www.christiandallas.com/about), a contemporary painter and muralist from Northern Kentucky, will be the artist to design the application on the third-floor wall. Mr. Dallas’ contemporary style will draw on themes of movement and flight – underscoring CVG’s role in providing air transportation to connect the Cincinnati region to the world. The mural application begins at the beginning of September with completion around the end of October.“The public nature of our new facility is an excellent opportunity to showcase the unique assets of the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky community, which include our robust artistic talent,” said Candace McGraw, chief executive officer, CVG. “These two works of art will build upon the sense of place we’ve established throughout our facilities to welcome visitors to the region and local travelers home.”“Employing local artists to create murals for CVG is a dream come true for ArtWorks,” said Colleen Houston, ArtWorks CEO and artistic director. “This space is vital and forms the first impression for our region’s visitors. We are thrilled this large-scale art will enhance that experience of travel, build civic pride and showcase the creativity of our community.” “Art is inspirational and having access to be exposed to art changes your perspective,” Gaither said. “I’m honored to have work in the airport back home. It was my dream, and now I’m living it.”“I’m grateful for the opportunity to leave my mark on this region that has meant so much to me,” said Christian Dallas. “I’m looking forward to leading Artworks’ apprentices again to create such a prominent work of art.”View of first floor where one of the murals will be applied. \# # #About ArtWorksArtWorks is an award-winning Greater Cincinnati nonprofit that transforms people and places through investments in creativity. Business Courier: Time to Board at CVG
Regional businesses ramp up post-pandemic travel, but a return to 2019 levels remains an uncertaintyCincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / July 2, 2021It’s the big question for airports, airlines, hotels, the hospitality industry and businesses across the country, the one that will determine when — or if — the travel industry gets back to pre-pandemic levels. When will companies send their employees back in to the air to meet with customers, talk with colleagues, drive sales and attend conferences? The _Business Courier_ asked five of Cincinnati’s largest companies about their plans and talked with airport officials, airline executives and industry experts. Locally, companies said they are bringing employees back to the office this summer and fall, with loosened travel restrictions either occurring concurrently or set to happen in the subsequent weeks and months. But there’s still anxiety, uncertainty and debate, particularly about whether business travel will ever return to 2019 levels. Several sources noted Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates’ prediction last year that half of all corporate travel will disappear in the post-coronavirus world, but adding they disagree that it will be that high.‘Looking into a crystal ball’Today, business travel for Delta Air Lines, CVG’s largest corporate carrier, is at 30% of its previous activity. “Every week, it gets stronger and stronger,” said Delta CEO Ed Bastian at the Bernstein Strategic Decisions Conference in June. “From the many CEOs and business leaders I talked to, people are … ready to go and they are starting to move.” Southwest Airlines expects a jump in business travel after Labor Day. “Everybody’s kind of looking into the crystal ball,” said Dave Harvey, Southwest Airlines’ vice president for corporate sales. “We’re kind of in the 10 to 20% (not returning) in the intermediate term. So much of business travel you can correlate to GDP. Recent economic indicators look bullish. We saw it after 9/11. We saw it after the financial crisis. It takes another year or two on the business side.” The University of Cincinnati’s Economics Center has been surveying local businesses, and, the preliminarily results indicate companies are ready when the time is right. “We found that while business-related travel came to a near full stop during 2020, businesses are looking to continue to increase their travels in 2021 and should be back at, or exceeding, pre-pandemic travel volume in 2022,” said Julie Heath, executive director and Alpaugh Family Chair in economics. CVG believes it will get 80% of its passenger volumes back this summer, but most of that activity will be leisure customers. Corporate demand is increasing, with CVG projecting a gradual recovery. “In line with industry analysts, pre-pandemic corporate and international travel demand will likely fully recover by 2023 or 2024,” said CVG CEO Candace McGraw. But there may be differences between big and large companies, said Doug Moormann, vice president for Development Strategies, a Cincinnati government affairs firm. Moormann has long paid attention to the region’s air service options for his clients. Frequently, smaller companies visit larger ones to try to earn their business. And large-cap companies are still bringing workers back to the office. “It’ll depend on the big guys. When they put people back in the air it will kind of give everybody else permission to do so,” Moormann said. “There’s nobody to go visit yet. That will put them on the road because they’ll have people to meet with.” In some markets, Harvey said small- and medium-sized companies were some of Southwest’s more frequent business travelers during the pandemic because they had fewer top-down policies on travel.Slow to bounce backStacie Schmahl, vice president at AAA Corporate Travel, a booking agent for small- and mid-sized companies in Cincinnati as well as nationally, said some of the company’s largest clients are not yet traveling. “They have more employees and probably more global standards they have to meet. Even though the U.S. has a good vaccination rate … other countries aren’t quite in the same place,” she said. Business travel also varies by sector. Manufacturing and logistics companies, classified as essential, have had to travel throughout the pandemic because of the need to service equipment. Health care employees were bound by a similar obligation. But banking, consulting and insurance businesses stayed grounded. While there has been much talk about continuing the use of virtual communication, Schmahl was skeptical. “As soon as your competitor shows up to something important in person, and you dial it in on video conference and your competitor wins that customer, you’ll be putting your people on planes pretty quickly,” she said. Instead, employers are unlikely to send 20 employees to the same conference when five would do, Schmahl said. And the days of flying round trip in one day for a two-hour meeting could be over. AAA has also found that employees themselves are eager to hit the road. “They’re telling me that as soon as my company allows me to go, I’m going to go,” Schmahl said. In general, up to a quarter of corporate travel budgets go toward internal company meetings, according to AAA. Companies that embrace a remote work environment may spend on this type of travel — the need to get employees together quarterly to maintain and build culture, for example. “They maybe only traveled once or twice a year but maybe now a company is saving on real estate but they don’t want to lose the culture,” Southwest’s Harvey said. “They’re going to say, ‘I still need you to come back to headquarters once per quarter.’ Now those folks are traveling four times a year instead of two.” The top demand for business destinations from CVG so far are Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Washington, D.C. Service to those markets has been restored, although not at the same levels.“As carriers adjust their networks and schedules for the remainder of 2021 and going into 2022, CVG is confident of our strong position to serve leisure and corporate demand with a robust mix of airlines and continued low fares,” McGraw said. None of the companies the Courier spoke with expressed concerns about CVG’s ability to bounce back, even as the fate of some second-tier nonstop flights to places like Connecticut or St. Louis remains unknown. “CVG is a fantastic airport and services business travelers in this region very well,” said Michelle Goret, Cintas’ vice president of corporate affairs. “There are many carriers at CVG that service areas of the country we generally travel to, and we will generally book the most direct route to our destination, regardless of carrier.”[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/07/02/time-to-board-at-cvg.html) (subscription-based)Read more - Jun 21, 2021

Business Courier: CVG's only trans-Atlantic flight to return
Cincinnati Business Courier / Chris Wetterich / June 7, 2021 Delta Air Lines’ flight from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport to Paris is tentatively scheduled to return starting Sept. 8, airport officials said, which is certain to be a relief for the region’s business community, which wanted more trans-Atlantic flights before the pandemic. It’s a key market for the region because it allows companies to get to Europe on a nonstop flight.“Direct trans-Atlantic service is critical for leisure and business travelers for quick and efficient connectivity of our region to the rest of the world,” said CVG CEO Candace McGraw. “CVG is currently the only airport in Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana with planned nonstop trans-Atlantic service in 2021. We look forward to welcoming back travelers on their way to Europe and beyond as global travel returns. I look forward to being able to be on the Paris flight myself.”The Paris flight was grounded on March 28, 2020, and was originally announced to restart in March, but much of Europe remained closed. France is expected to begin reopening in the next few weeks. While Delta is selling tickets for the flight, the schedule is tentative based on European travel restrictions and conditions as well as demand levels.CVG was once the only airport in Ohio, Kentucky or Indiana with a Paris flight. Before the pandemic, Delta had begun offering the same route from Indianapolis.Overall, the airline industry is not expecting international travel to return to previous levels until 2022 or 2023.The percentage of seats sold on Delta’s international flights stands at around 35%, CVG’s vice president for external affairs, Bobby Spann, told the airport’s board at its last meeting. Europe’s reopening will help such flights.“Hopefully, that will take place in the third quarter,” Spann said of the Paris flight. “International is going to be the last thing that comes back, it looks like.”CVG also provided new numbers on travel demand at CVG, with June operating at 79% of 2019 levels so far, and July projected to be at 81%. For the two peak summer travel months, CVG will have nonstop service to 50 destinations on 12 carriers.Delta is also scheduled to restart service to Baltimore, Dallas, Chicago-O’Hare and Philadelphia on Sept. 8. All four regions are served by other airlines out of CVG currently. Officials also say Delta is selling tickets to Raleigh-Durham starting Sept. 8.When it comes to the rest of Delta’s network at CVG, officials previously projected service to Toronto may return by the fall, with San Francisco, Kansas City, St. Louis and Hartford, Conn., returning in 2022.[FULL STORY HERE](https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2021/06/07/cvg-s-only-trans-atlantic-flight-to-return.html) (subscription-based)Read more
